More problems with UNUM

By Dennis Youngblood, DDS

Dr. Morris, I was enlightened, pleased and depressed by your letters. I am an oral surgeon who fell while playing golf and sustained a neck injury which resulted in a Brown-Sequard Syndrome. I have paresthesia/dyesthesia on my right side from my arm/hand extending to my right foot/toes. Additionally, my left side is weak, with chronic intermittent spasticity on the right. To top it of, I have had constant pain in my neck, right hip, and right arm since 9/4/96. Incidentally, I underwent fusion of c4-c6 in order to halt the worsening of my symptoms. I have not been able to practice since 9/4/96. I have at the urging of UNUM tried to practice again, but found surgery difficult at best and dangerous  to myself and my patients at worst. I recieved benefits for approximately six months and summarily dumped. They have, according to their representative videotaped me, and perhaps even more than that! My neurosurgeon was appalled by their disbelief! I was examined by several board certified specialists, including neurosurgeons, neurologists, physiatrists, and internists, and all came to the same conclusion. I even volunteered to be examined by any doctor(s) of their choosing. At present, I am unable to walk without tripping because of a left foot drop(I use an AFO for stability). My balance is shot! I have a constant painful tingling in my right arm/ hand (median and ulnar nerves), spasms, and clonus bilaterally, but would you trust my surgical skills?

My attorneys have filed suit against UNUM as recently as last month. While I have a great deal of confidence in this firm, I am philosophical. UNUM will spend a few hundred thousand dollars in order to avoid spending millions! I would love to correspond with you and perhaps allow my attorneys glean any information you might have to aid our cause. I too am not interested in causing financial harm to UNUM, but I am interested in the company honoring its contract! I paid my premiums faithfully for years, and continue to do so, even though they have shown themselves less than trustworthy(in my opinion). I also understand that they may and probably do, monitor this and other internet sites. I only hope others will speak up concerning their treatment by this company.
